Blow Out
Brian De Palma, USA 1981
By accident, John Travolta as a sound engineer holds the only evidence of an assassination attempt in his hands. An artfully staged thriller with an eighties look that couldn't be better.
By accident, a sound engineer, played by John Travolta, finds the only evidence of an assassination attempt. An artfully staged thriller with an eighties look that couldn't be better.
Sound engineer Jack Terry (John Travolta) is actually looking for sound effects for a B-movie. By chance, he witnesses a car accident during test recordings - which may not have been an accident at all, but an assassination attempt. At the very least, a shot can be heard on his tape just before the car leaves his path. But that is just the tip of the iceberg. A web of intrigue is slowly uncovered, which also involves Sally (Nancy Allen), who was also in the car, luckily survived and now takes Jack's side.
If Quentin Tarantino could only take three films to a desert island, BLOW OUT would be one of them. With this sophisticated film, legendary director Brian De Palma is at the height of his art: scene by scene, shot by shot, a stylish piece of auteur pulp cinema unfolds that is just as reminiscent of Michelangelo Antonioni's classic BLOW-UP (1966) as it is of the paranoid thrillers of the 1970s. At the same time, it always refers to itself as a film - from the opening sequence to perhaps the most vicious final scene in film history.
