Vilhelm Hammershøi. Painter of the silent sound
The perfect way to start your visit to the exhibition
Rarely is painting as enigmatic and yet as fascinating as in the work of the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864 Copenhagen – 1916 Copenhagen). His subtle visual worlds, which encompass interiors, cityscapes and landscapes, are characterised by a distinctive use of light, a restrained colour palette and a haunting, silent presence. The motifs reveal his experimental and innovative approach to representation.
The exhibition’s subtitle, ‘Painter of the Silent Sound’, makes it clear that Hammershøi’s art appeals to multiple senses. The silence in his works makes us sensitive to the slightest sounds. His fascination with music, in particular, has shaped his artistic style and his pictorial compositions. This creates space for close observation as well as for personal impressions.
