Opera is weird, over-the-top, and old school? Absolutely! Come on over, let yourself be transported to another world, and find out for yourself why the Opernhaus Zürich is one of the world's leading cultural institutions.
Trifonov & Järvi
3rd Philharmonic Concert / Prokofiev Cycle IV
To conclude our Prokofiev cycle, we welcome Daniil Trifonov, one of the most fascinating pianists of our time. With his brilliant technique and extraordinary musicality, he is the ideal soloist for Sergei Prokofiev’s monumental Second Piano Concerto. Prokofiev himself was a highly gifted pianist when he presented this new work at the age of 22. Extravagant technical challenges are combined with the full range of Prokofiev’s avant-garde style from his early years in St Petersburg. In stark contrast stands Prokofiev’s Seventh Symphony, premiered in Moscow in 1952, which the Orchestra of the Zurich Opera House will perform afterwards under the baton of Paavo Järvi. Composed under Stalin’s dictatorship, this fairytale-like, lyrical work evokes a wistful utopia.
