3x2: Focus on Winterthur

The December Exhibition has traditionally served as a platform for artistic creation from the city and region of Winterthur. For some time now, this has taken the form of an annual cycle comprising a juried exhibition at the Kunsthalle and the Kunst Museum Winterthur, and an invitation-only ‘Focus’ exhibition held exclusively at the Kunst Museum Winterthur. In 2025, all artists in the region were able to apply to participate by submitting a portfolio; a specialist jury selected around thirty artistic positions from the applications. In the Focus Exhibitions, on the other hand, various approaches have been tested in recent years. On one occasion, artists selected by the curatorial team each invited a colleague; in another year, the museum specifically focused on a younger generation of artists who had not yet, or had scarcely, exhibited their work.

For 2026, the Kunst Museum Winterthur is fundamentally changing the concept of its Focus Exhibition. Instead of a curated group exhibition featuring ten to twelve invited artists, a total of six artists will be invited. Two of them will each exhibit in a separate cabinet room at the Museum Reinhart am Stadtgarten. Hence the title: 3 x 2.

This concept allows the individual artists to be given a significantly greater presence by focusing on selected positions and providing each with their own room. Furthermore, it enables cherished traditions of the December exhibition to be fundamentally questioned and new approaches to promoting regional art and, in particular, its visibility at the Kunst Museum Winterthur to be explored.

The list of invited artists will be announced in the course of the year.
