Couch Reading: Dorothee Kohler – Four Pages of Life
At the ‘Sofa Readings’, Swiss debut authors take their place on a flat-share sofa or a studio couch and present their work in an intimate setting.
After his death, Dorothee Kohler’s father leaves her boxes full of documents. It is purely by chance that the author opens a box and thereby learns of an aunt about whom her family had previously maintained a strict silence. Spurred on by curiosity, but also by the shock at the scale of the secret, she decides to find out more about the life of her hidden aunt. In doing so, Kohler’s story also touches on a dark chapter in Switzerland’s past: the treatment of women in psychiatric care. She summarises the findings of her research in her debut book *Vier Seiten Leben* (Limmat Verlag 2026) – a moving investigative account of a hidden family history.
