The Aesthetics of Totalitarianism
The aesthetics of totalitarian monumental buildings are both fascinating and frightening. Their sheer scale serves as a demonstration of power as well as a means of isolation and intimidation. In stone, concrete and symmetry, a collective self-assurance materialises that towers over and engulfs the individual. It is precisely here that their ambivalence lies: the sublime lends power a beautiful, almost seductive mask – and makes it all the more frightening.
The discussion will explore the diversity of typologies and design strategies in totalitarian architecture.
