The Mayfield
The project by pianist, orchestra leader and theatre director Heiner Goebbels is named after the Mayfield Depot, a huge disused railway station in Manchester, where they developed the piece and whose dark, cool and dirty character inspired the aesthetics of the music. This is characterised by the coexistence of acoustic and electronic instruments, from percussion to bird calls, saxophone and prepared grand piano to Ondes Martinot, one of the first electronic instruments. A special electric guitar equipped with digital sensors creates a link between these different sound worlds: Mayfield's music is a soundscape between controlled noise and "musique concrête instrumentale".
