Black Skinned, White Masked
Fazil On Yu presents his full-length dance-theatre performance “BLACK SKINNED, WHITE MASKED” for the first time in public at the Theater am Gleis. The piece powerfully explores the stereotyping, constraints and coping strategies faced by BIPoC in Switzerland. At its heart are questions of identity, belonging and loss, which Fazil On Yu reflects upon from his own perspective as a Zurich resident born in Uganda. Inspired by Frantz Fanon’s work Black Skin, White Masks, Fazil On Yu, as a choreographer and dancer, has developed a multi-layered performance in collaboration with, amongst others, the musician and composer Ssemaganda Ronald and the multidisciplinary media artist Lukas Schroth. Through the interplay of drama, dance, poetry and music, a work emerges that offers a multifaceted interpretation of contemporary society and the realities of life. Biography of Fazil On Yu:
Fazil On Yu is a dance and performance artist, choreographer and activist born in Uganda. He studied art and psychology and currently lives in Zurich. His work is primarily in the field of dance theatre and performance art. Through interdisciplinary projects taking place in classical, experimental and digital spaces, he knows how to continually challenge and inspire his audience. Fazil describes himself as a rebellious artist.
In his work, he interprets, reflects on and comments on the present – inspired by the realities of life, particularly pressing socio-political issues. He is convinced that theatre is a powerful tool for social engagement, participation and empowerment.
