Constant companions

The Theatre of the Canton of Zurich is performing at the Rigiblick Theatre.

“My God, what on earth will happen if you start lying too? If we humans can’t even trust the machines anymore.”
- From ‘Constant Companions’

Lorraine is a successful lawyer and is in a very bad mood on the day of her 60th birthday. Her marriage to Conrad is currently at a low point and there is no reason to celebrate. Jan60, the android caretaker of her office complex, isn’t programmed for this, and he has, of course, activated all the birthday celebrations.
At the same time, IT technician Winston has been called in by Andrea DeSantos to examine and reprogramme her android maid. The problem: the android domestic worker is said to have formed an emotional bond with her seventeen-year-old son. Winston faces a technical challenge that unexpectedly moves him. He really can’t help his friend Don, who is constantly phoning him for advice on how to assemble the components of his brand-new robot model.

In a humorous tapestry of longings and misunderstandings, Alan Ayckbourn takes a light-hearted look into the future in his latest play: ‘Are we really ready to encounter another species that we ourselves have created and which will inevitably, at some point, prove to be far more intelligent than us?’
