Democracies under pressure
A panel discussion on the threat to democracies posed by populist and authoritarian parties.
Or how do populist-authoritarian systems come about?
Populist and authoritarian parties are on the rise worldwide, including in Europe. They threaten liberal democracy based on the rule of law, which is the foundation of peace, freedom and prosperity as we know them. Why are democracies so much on the defensive that populists seem to have an easy time of it? What are the social and economic reasons behind this? Can this trend be halted, and how can democracy be saved?
Christoph Vollenweider discusses this with the Basel-based entrepreneur Andreas Zivy, who served on the board of the Swiss Democracy Foundation and, as a co-founder, chairs the Democracy Foundation Basel.
He is the author of the book *Die dekonstruierte Gesellschaft – oder das Ende der Aufklärung* (Schwabe Verlag).
