One pope too many.

It’s almost like a crime thriller. A pope has gone missing. It’s said to have been a woman. Unheard of!

Marguerite Spycher has set out to uncover the truth and has written a book about it. We’ll enjoy some highlights from her investigation spanning the centuries: Why is Pope John missing from official lists? Why are pages missing from old manuscripts? Who embellished biographies – and why?

Contemporary accounts confirm that there was a Pope John at that time. However, he is not listed anywhere in any official records. Some authors write of a Johannes Anglicus who became Pope, even though he is said to have been a woman. Others dismiss this as a malicious fabrication designed to ridicule the Church and cause it harm.

The author convincingly demonstrates that the educated Johanna of Mainz, who became Pope, is a historical figure.
