Cereals, genetics and greenhouses: stories of monotony and diversity

Panel discussion

Our diet is closely intertwined with health, social and environmental issues: the same old tomato in winter goes hand in hand with structural violence in Almería. Cereals bred for efficiency affect our gut health. The monopolisation of seeds by just a handful of large global corporations threatens biodiversity and the variety of food on our plates. Farmers are dependent on them.

How can we convey these invisible connections? What ethical and political questions arise from them? We approach these questions from three perspectives:

Kenah Cusanit reads from her essay Senatore Cappelli, which won the German Nature Writing Prize.

Daniel Rihs will show images from his photographic journey Tomato Travels, and

François Meienberg talks about his work on seed policy at ProSpecieRara and other organisations.

This will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Claudia Keller (University of Fribourg/Board Member of entresol).

This event is a collaboration between the University of Fribourg, the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF), entresol and sphères.
