‘Thinking about Hope: War’

Jehona Kicaj in conversation with Tuğba Ayaz

Fascist governments are destroying democracies. Ongoing wars are claiming lives. Women are under greater threat than ever before. 2024 was the hottest year on record. The world is on fire. How do we find courage? How do we cultivate hope? How do we foster solidarity? Journalist Tuğba Ayaz curates and presents the series ‘Thinking Hope’. In this second instalment, she continues to debate the pressing issues of our time with guests from the worlds of literature and academia.

She speaks with author Jehona Kicaj about the pain of war. Her highly acclaimed debut ‘ë’ (2025) seeks a language for the unspeakable: loss through war, powerlessness and pain. The speechlessness that frames this novel also seems to reflect a diffuse feeling of our times.

What voice can a generation find that experiences war from a distance, yet bears its consequences? How can speaking about collective traumas foster a sense of hope? Building on this, the discussion aims to ‘think hope’.
