Ingeborg Bachmann’s *Todesarten* and the film *Modi di Morire* – screening and discussion

Drawing on Ingeborg Bachmann’s unfinished cycle of novels *Todesarten*, *Modi di Morire* weaves together fragments of Bachmann’s text to create an associative film collage. Film screening followed by a discussion with director Tina-Maria Feyrer and Philipp Theisohn, moderated by Martina Caluori.

Ingeborg Bachmann’s novel project *Todesarten* ranks among the key literary explorations of violence, language, female existence and social inscription in the German-speaking world of the 20th century. Bachmann does not view death as a singular event, but as a structural process that manifests itself even whilst one is still alive. The ‘ways of dying’ appear as metaphorical, psychological and social forms of dying: as speechlessness, loss of identity, patriarchal violence, isolation, madness and inner disintegration.

‘Modi di Morire’ takes up these ideas and translates them into an independent cinematic form. Selected passages from *Malina*, *The Case of Franza* and *Requiem for Fanny Goldmann* form a resonant space that is not adapted, but rather further developed cinematically.

Following the film screening, director Tina-Maria Feyrer and Philipp Theisohn will discuss Ingeborg Bachmann and the dialogue between novel and film.
