No gravel square in the city is as authentic as that of the Kanzleiareal in hectic Kreis 4, where the Xenix cinema and the Xenix bar are located. A home for films, a space for cineastic discoveries and carefully curated programmes, for discussions ...

Kajillionaire
Miranda July, USA 2020
A daughter must also free herself from unconventional parents. An absurd, existential and whimsical journey into precarious America.
Old Dolio (Evan Rachel Wood) and her parents (Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins) live in a cluttered office space in Los Angeles, where a good load of foam spills through the ceiling once a day. On the fringes of society, they eke out a living with petty criminal activities. The isolated family unit follows a strict code of honour when it comes to the fair distribution of the loot. No petty bourgeois sentimentalities such as pet names or birthday parties are allowed. But even a somewhat eccentric daughter has to be able to break away from her parents in adulthood. When the lively Melanie (Gina Rodriguez) unexpectedly joins the family on a flight to New York for fraudulent purposes, nothing is ever the same again.
Miranda July's origins as a performance artist shine through with dry humour and equally good acting. The physicality with which Old Dolio's social awkwardness is portrayed makes KAJILLIONAIRE a quirky stumble with unexpected slapstick charm - with strange disguises and an existential trip in a public toilet.
