Karosh Taha and her new novel *Gulistan*
“I did not plunge the country into war. The country plunged me into war.”
Gulistan lives with her husband Çiya in a country that is hostile towards her because of her language, her way of thinking, her very being. Under Saddam Hussein’s dictatorial regime, they are persecuted as Kurds. When Çiya goes missing, Gulistan sets out to find him. Nothing can break her determination to find her beloved again, even as she is repeatedly confronted with the extent of her own powerlessness. Eventually, she encounters Çiya again at a gathering in the midst of a crowd – wearing the dictator’s uniform, as his double.
Karosh Taha was shortlisted for the German Book Prize with *Gulistan*.
