The democratic principle in art

The Zurich-based artist, graphic designer and theorist Richard Paul Lohse is one of the key figures in constructivist-concrete art. The Museum Haus Konstruktiv is dedicating a major exhibition to him.

Serielles Reihenthema in achtzehn Farben, Variation A, B und C von Richard Paul Lohse.

For Documenta 7 in 1982, the 80-year-old Lohse created the three large-format works (measuring just under 6 x 2 metres) *“Serielles Reihenthema in achtzehn Farben, Variation A, B und C”*. They mark the high point of Lohse’s work on serial order and impressively illustrate his working method, based on system and logic. The serial order is conceived as endless. And in the arrangement of the rows with 18 colour shades, the complementary colours also relate to one another. The Documenta 7 paintings are on display in the exhibition at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv. A metal railing had to be cut up specifically to transport the huge paintings into the museum.

The exhibition at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv runs until 10 May 2026 and features 50 exhibits – paintings, sketches and construction drawings – from the years 1942 to 1987.
