The Theater Kanton Zürich (TZ) was founded in 1971 as a cooperative. The special feature of the theatre is its mobility. As a travelling theatre, it is always playing somewhere else: in the municipalities of the canton as well as in guest theatres throughout German-speaking Switzerland. The theatre with its own ensemble puts on five to seven new productions every season and plays up to 150 performances. Rüdiger Burbach has been the artistic director since 2010.
The TZ is based in Winterthur. This is where the workshops, costume studio, fundus and administration are housed and where rehearsals and premieres take place. The cooperative Theatre for the Canton of Zurich is made up of almost 100 political communities, around 20 school communities and a good 250 private individuals and companies. The financial basis is ensured by the generous commitment of the Canton of Zurich.
