In ancient Egypt, mourners drew attention to the death of the buried by loud lamentations and clamouring, but also by singing and dancing. The ritual wailing of the "professional mourners" was intended to remove the taboo surrounding death, to drive away or appease evil spirits of the dead and to unite people in their mourning.
