Culture in the district 10

Misleading tongues have labelled Wipkingen the new hipster hotspot. I find District 10, which includes Höngg, to be extremely informal and cosy.

Die Event-Highlights im Sommer:

4 to 6 July 2024 | Sofaopenairkino Wipkingen:

When I moved in, the seating in this cinema consisted exclusively of sofas and armchairs dragged in from brockis, friends and shared flats. The cinema has since professionalised, but it is still charming and the courtyard of the Guthirt church is simply magical.

5 to 6 July 2024 | LandenBergFest:

The neighbourhood festival for young and old, for residents and everyone else. With a bouncy castle (most of the time), barbecue, children's flea market, various bands and lots of love!

10 to 28 July 2024 | FILMFLUSS

Who doesn't know them: Ceci and Pablo are the host couple of hearts. For 30 (!) years, they have been running the incredibly beautiful open-air cinema FILMFLUSS and on Tuesdays - and this year also on Thursdays! - the Flussssbar. Be sure to go there. To the cinema, to the bar, to Ceci, to Pablo!

23 to 24 August 2024 | Röschi cinema

After the summer holidays, the Röschi cinema once again invites you to experience the Mediterranean feeling and transforms Röschibachplatz into an open-air cinema for everyone.

Already over is the Openair Wipkingen. Make a note for next year!

Would you rather listen than sing yourself?

Of course, you don't always have to produce your own music in Wikpingen. The Nordbrüggli hosts concerts on an irregular basis and also in the garden of Am Damm, where small but excellent bands play from time to time.

A book and a café: what more could you want?

Bookshop Chapter 10
In 2019, Andreas Pätzold decided to open a bookshop. As a career changer, mind you! But if there is passion behind it, then it will be good. The passionately run bookshop with an integrated café regularly hosts readings and the book range comprises around 2,000 titles with a consistent focus on new releases.

Das gemütliche Café Nude beim Tanzhaus Zürich

A house for dance

The Tanzhaus has been promoting contemporary dance since 1996. And since the new replacement building was inaugurated in 2019, it has become more inclusive than ever. With workshops, dance courses, performances of all kinds and the Café Nude, it has integrated itself wonderfully into the neighbourhood.

Unique exhibitions

Admittedly, Wipkingen is not as famous as district 1 or 5 when it comes to museums, but we do have some unique treasures:

The Jeans Museum
In fact, my husband was once asked if he would put his jeans in a museum. He thought it was a joke. But the person he was talking to was probably Ruedi Karrer, who owns over 14,000 pairs of jeans and shows them to interested parties on request. Incidentally, he is a star on Instagram with almost 70,000 followers!

Wartsaal Wipkingen
Where once the Wipkingen railway travel agency was at home - directly at Wipkingen railway station - the Wartsaal Wipkingen has been a multifunctional meeting and cultural space open to activities of all kinds since 202.

Civil Defence Museum
Just recently, a friend told me about his civilian service and I realised that I knew nothing about civil defence and civilian service. Even though I only live a few metres away from the Civil Defence Museum. That's why I'll soon be visiting the round bunker built in 1941.
Public guided tours are available on 3 August and 2 November, on the Long Night of Museums on 7 September and privately for individual groups on request.

Alternative neighbourhood culture

Park Platz
A favourite place for many is the meeting place Park Platz, which is open to people of all origins, ages and genders. The location is currently looking for interested individuals or collectives who would like to bring a breath of fresh air to "Parki" by means of an open call. Find out more

Wip West Huus (Reformed Church Zurich)
The Wip West Huus near Wipkingerplatz can be hired as a coworking space or for events of all kinds. Concerts are also held in the pretty garden on some Sunday afternoons.

My first time... at the Tram Museum

It’s a brief journey back in time – to a Zurich where people were warned about sharp hat pins and a public transport ticket cost just a few rappen.

My first time … at the Winterthur Museum of Applied Arts

It’s sparkling, shimmering and glistening everywhere. To go with that, a quote from Dolly Parton: ‘There’s no such thing as too much glitter’. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.
