Live music in June

Good Flying Birds play such brilliant shred-guitar sludge music, it’s as if it were 1996 rather than 2026. And as if J Mascis had just decided to leave Dinosaur Jr behind and join the band Guided By Voices. But that’s not the case: Good Flying Birds are a bunch of young people from Indianapolis who released their debut album last year and have clearly dedicated themselves to the past in the best possible sense. Support comes from Mnevis, led by Zurich-based multi-instrumentalist Mario Hänni.

Three musical traditions, three outstanding musicians, one joint project: Greek multi-instrumentalist Andreas Paragioudakis, Palestinian percussionist and vocal artist Tony Majdalani, and German (double) bassist Florian King have joined forces to set the poem “After the Noise” by Swiss poet Lucie Schaeren to music. It deals with war and peace, universal experiences and hope. And what we’ve heard so far leaves us wanting more.

Life can be tricky. Adrian Thaws, who goes by the name Tricky, knows this better than anyone. He lost his mother at the age of four and his daughter at fifty-one, both to suicide. The founder of Massive Attack and a pioneer of the genre that would soon be known as trip-hop, he quickly rose to fame with his albums in the nineties. And at the same time, he used his music to process his emotional pain. In the Polish singer Marta, he has found a new long-term collaborator who accompanies his dark tracks and will also be performing at the Kaufleuten.

Three words are enough to describe Sunn O)))’s music: drone, drone and drone. These robed musicians unleash massive walls of guitar sound towards the audience, making the air and bodies tremble. Uncomfortably pleasant.
