My first time ... at Atelier Righini Fries

It’s a real hidden gem: behind the façade of the stately villa at 150 Klosbachstrasse lies the three-generation legacy of the Righini Fries family of artists.

The ‘Righini Fries Foundation’, which has taken up residence at the family’s former home on Klosbachstrasse, was established in 2008 by Hanny Fries and her husband. By establishing the foundation, Fries, who had no children, ensured with foresight that her family’s artistic legacy would be preserved for posterity. The archive houses an impressive collection of 1,200 oil paintings and several thousand drawings – how I would have loved to have gone down into the cellar. These works document the creative output of three generations: Sigismund Righini (1870–1937), Willy Fries (1881–1965) and Hanny Fries (1918–2009) – all of whom lived and worked in Zurich. The family’s written estate breathes further life into this legacy. Time and again, the exhibition’s focal points are shaped by this material. A new exhibition is planned for spring 2025. Until then, the Bijou opens its doors by appointment.

It’s sparkling, shimmering and glistening everywhere. To go with that, a quote from Dolly Parton: ‘There’s no such thing as too much glitter’. I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed.

‘The second time round, the audience hears the piece with fresh ears’

In its new concert series at the Cabaret Voltaire, the Collegium Novum performs the same piece twice at each concert. Why? We asked the co-artistic director.
