Live music in July & August

It's festival and open-air concert season again. Like every summer, the Rote Fabrik and the Barfussbar guarantee a great musical summer setting, but this year it's also worth making a trip to the Tiefenbrunnen mill.

Jazzhane Festival

Because it was so great last year, there will be another Jazzhane Festival at the Rote Fabrik this year. With workshops on electronic music production and stringed instruments from the Near and Far East, with a panel discussion on "Politics of Curatorship". And with live music from the great Arabic fuzz band Al-Qasar or Lalalar from Istanbul, who turn Turkish psychedelic upbeat.

Follia

The Barfussbar Wednesday belongs to the local musicians. There are always exciting new discoveries to marvel at. Follia, for example. Lia Neff calls her solo project Kontra Pop. Double bass and Loop Station underpin profound German-language lyrics, resulting in a sound and atmosphere somewhere between familiar and unfamiliar.

Glyders

Before the Waxy Bar goes on its summer break, a band from Chicago really heats things up here: Glyders play "maximal minimal rock and roll" in the style of late 60s America. They will be accompanied by the mysterious Zurich duo LNA. You can look forward to it!

Malummí

"Dog Days" is the name of the Miller's summer festival at Tiefenbrunnen Mill. During the summer holidays, there is always a reading on Fridays and a concert on Saturdays. The musical highlight is Malummí, the Basel band centred around singer Larissa Rapold. A whirlwind of psychedelic rock, folk and pop, perfect for a cosy summer evening outside.

Black Mountain

Long hair, oppressive guitars and ominous synthesiser fanfares: Black Mountain are undisputedly among the best touring the world today in the service of psychedelic and progressive rock. The band, born out of an artist commune in Vancouver, Canada, is sure to make the Viaduct Arch shake.

Marcos Valle

The name Marcos Valle has been haunting the hipster music circles of our big cities for several years now. The cover of his self-titled 1983 album is iconic, with the blond-haired Brazilian raising a drink obviously spiked with Blue Curaçao to toast. But Valle is not just a cool retro reference, he is one of Brazil's biggest bossa nova pop stars and is still active. The summer performance at Moods by the 80-year-old, who is apparently still blonde-headed today, promises holiday vibes.

Lethargy Festival

For 30 years, the Rote Fabrik has provided a home for darker souls while dancing around the lake at the Street Parade. This year, the old local heroes Saalschutz will take to the stage again, Sami Galbi from Lausanne will bring Maghrebian club sounds and Brian Bamanya from Uganda, aka Afrorack, will demonstrate his self-built modular synthesiser. To mark this year's anniversary, dark electronic musician Trentemøller will open the festival on Thursday. It could hardly be less summer.
